DURHAM, N.C — The No. 26 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team return home from the ITA Kickoff Weekend after a 4-0 loss to No. 19 San Diego.
Vanderbilt entered the weekend with a 3-0 start to the season, but were shaken up from the start of Saturday’s match as the Toreros took a quick lead in doubles play.
On court two USD’s Page and Petronijevic came out on fire, only allowing Pen Binet and Ryan Smith one game in their 6-1 victory.
With the match advantage, the senior/freshman duo of Rhys Johnson and Cameron Klinger were duking it out against one of the best teams in the country; 7th-ranked Vittek/Angus. Johnson/Klinger came in undefeated, with all three wins at No. 1 singles. However, Vittck and Angus, edged out the Dore duo, 6-4.
Daniel Valent and Baker Newman were up 4-3 on court three at the clinch.
With the 1-0 advantage, Vittek and Angus both used motivation from their doubles wins as Vittek defeated Newman at No. 3; 6-3, 6-4. Ranked No. 34 in the latest Oracle/ITA rankings, Amgus took the first set on two over Johnson, 6-1. But the Vandy senior fought hard in the second, forcing a tiebreaker. USD earned the 3-0 advantage taking court two; 6-1, 7-6(3).
The Toreros sealed the sweep over VU with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Smith on court six.
Due to Winter Storm Jonas, Vanderbilt will not compete in Sunday’s consolation match, as No. 27 Cal could not fly out to North Carolina.
