Vandy Men’s Golf Opens Play in NCAA East Regional Thursday 5/18/2005 Nashville, Tenn. – Vanderbilt joins 26 other men’s golf teams Thursday in the NCAA East Regional hosted by the Southeastern Conference at the Golf Club of Tennessee. It marks the third consecutive year the Commodores have made the elite field under head coach Press McPhaul. The Commodores are one of 10 Southeastern Conference teams to make it to regional play. VU earned the No. 18 seed and will join No. 1 seed Georgia, No. 3 seed Florida, No. 6 seed Tennessee and No. 8 seed Alabama in the NCAA East Region. Kentucky earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Central Region and represent the SEC along with No. 18 seed Arkansas. Auburn is the third seed in the NCAA West Region joining the eighth seed South Carolina and No. 11 seed LSU. Vanderbilt finished ninth at the NCAA East Regional one year ago and advanced to the NCAA Championships before finishing 28th. The Commodores have had an up-and-down season in 2004-05. VU finished 12th at the SEC Championships and third at the three-team UK Derby Invitational in its last two outtings. The Commodores are led by sophomore Luke List, a First-Team All-SEC selection. List is ranked 33rd by Golfweek after posting a 72.00 stroke average. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site. A total of 423 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Of these players, 156 will advance to the championship final, held on May 19-21. Ten teams and two individuals will advance from each region. The NCAA Championships will be conducted June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. Loyola College (Maryland) is the host institution for this year’s championships. Play begins Thursday at with the first tee-time set for 7:12 a.m. Vanderbilt is paired Thursday with Louisville and Virginia. Will Armstrong will be first off the tee at 7:12 a.m., followed every nine minutes by Dos Goldsmith, Brett Lange, Mark Donnell and Luke List. The regional will conclude Saturday.
