Vandy Hosts Commodore Classic

9/9/2004

Saturday morning at 10:15 a.m. CT at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn., sophomore Ashleigh Wetzel will lead the Vanderbilt women’s cross country team against 11 other schools at the 2004 Commodore Classic.

Belmont University, third in their home meet last weekend, is expected to challenge Vanderbilt for the title. Only nice points separated the two teams last week.

The Commodore Classic will be the VU’s first five-kilometer (3.1-mile) race of the season.

“I hope this meet puts us further along the fitness curve as we get ready for the big meets of the season — Stanford and Notre Dame,” Head Coach Jim Spivey said.

Last year Vanderbilt won this contest and Coach Spivey has high expectations for this weekend’s meet.

“Sophomores Lauren Pence and Debbie Huss will look to move up through the field, as last week they were slow over the first mile. Junior Brittany Sizer, making her third appearance at the home meet, will try and improve on her spectacular performance at the Belmont opener. Freshman Julie Eckerly, who also made a strong showing at the opener, will look to move up in place on Saturday.”

The team competes this weekend and then has a week off before traveling to Stanford for the Cardinal invitational on Sept. 25.
