NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 43 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team capped off its last home match of the season, suffering a hard fought 5-2 setback to the 35th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels. The `Dores kicked off the match by honoring its two seniors, Rhys Johnson and Kris Yee.
In doubles action the Commodores got off to a slow start, and the Rebels benefitted by taking the point advantage into singles. Pen Binet and Daniel Valent fell first on court three to Hasson/Lindmark, 6-2. The `Dores suffered an upset loss on court one as No. 16 Johnson and Cameron Klinger lost 6-3 to No. 41 Kraljevic/Babic. Tate Allwardt and Baker Newman led Ole Miss 4-3 on court two at the clinch.
In singles action the Rebs earned an additional win on court six to give the squad a 2-0 lead over the Commodores. But No. 116 Klinger responded, earning a solid ranked win over No. 58, senior Stefan Lindmark, 6-1, 7-6(3).
Newman earned VU’s second point of the competition, defeating Grey Hamilton with a victory on court four, 6-3, 3-7, 6-4. Following the victory at No. four, Ole Miss went on to win three of four three setters to give Vanderbilt its sixth loss of league play, 5-2.
Notes:
– With the loss, the Commodores own a 13-12, 4-6 record
– The Sunday loss was the Commodores’ fourth-straight to Ole Miss
– Newman earned his 40th victory for the black and gold
– Johnson/Klinger suffered their third loss on SEC play
