AUSTIN, Texas — No. 13 Vanderbilt soccer fell at Texas as the Longhorns capitalized on a late penalty kick to claim a 2-1 victory at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday night.
After a scoreless first half, Texas (3-7-1, 1-3-0 SEC) broke through in the 67th minute when Amalia Villarreal finished off a pass from Ava McDonald.
Vanderbilt (7-3-1, 1-2-1 SEC) answered in the 79th minute as Olivia Stafford netted her fourth goal of the season, converting a ball from Mary Beth McLaughlin and Courtney Jones to draw even.
The Commodores were issued a red card in the 90th minute, forcing a Texas penalty kick with 10 seconds remaining. Villarreal converted to seal the 2–1 win for the Longhorns.
The Commodores outshot the Longhorns 17-10 and finished with an 8-3 margin in corner kicks.
Vanderbilt returns home Thursday at 7 p.m. to host Auburn at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex on SEC Network+.
