Vanderbilt Women’s Soccer Ends Regular Season with 1-0 win over Saint Louis 10/29/2003 Senior Jennifer Lewis Scores First Goal of the Season in the Victory ST. LOUIS, Mo.– Senior Jennifer Lewis scored her first goal of the season to help lead Vanderbilt to a 1-0 victory over Saint Louis Wednesday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium in non-conference action. Lewis struck a corner that ricocheted out of the Saint Louis area to Lewis, who lofted a 15-yard shot under the cross bar. “It was so great to see Jen Lewis score a goal in her last regular season game as a Commodore,” Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Hill said. In a scoreless first half, Saint Louis outshot the Commodores 8-1. SLU’s Christie Cigno had the best scoring chance with a 10-yard shot at the left post that VU’s Esther Thompson covered in the 31st minute. After a difficult first half, the Commodores reorganized and came out putting a lot of pressure on the Billikens in the second half. Prior to Lewis’ goal, senior Michelle Bruntlett emerged from a scramble in front of the SLU goal and drilled an eight-yard shot that was knocked away by SLU defender Tressa Pecher. SLU goalkeeper Lyndsay Gensler made another save in the 68th minute, diving to the right post to corral VU midfielder Emily Wilpers’ 16-yard shot. SLU’s leading scorer Jamie Perry took Cigno’s pass in the 76th minute and broke in at the right post, but Thompson turned away Perry’s shot. “The first half belonged to Saint Louis and the second half belonged to us,” Hill said. “It’s great to get some momentum going into our conference tournament next week.” Saint Louis outshot Vanderbilt 11-7, but the Commodores had a 5-2 edge on corner kicks.
