Starting Lineups
– Vanderbilt started sophomore John Jenkins, as well as juniors Jeffery Taylor and Brad Tinsley at guard…red-shirt juniors Festus Ezeli and Andre Walker started at center and guard, respectively…this is the fourth time Vanderbilt has used this starting lineup and the third time this season.
– Jeffery Taylor leads the team with 67 career starts…Brad Tinsley is making his 58th career start while Andre Walker is starting for the 35th time…Festus Ezeli is appearing in his 63rd game, including his 14th start…John Jenkins has made 10 starts and played in 34 games.
Postgame Notes:
– The Commodores dropped their first contest of the 2010-11 season with a 74-71 loss to West Virginia in the second game of the 2010 Honda Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
– This was the first meeting between the two teams.
– In neutral site, preseason tournament games since 2006, Vanderbilt has a 9-3 record (loss to Appalachian State in the finals of 2006 San Juan Shootout, first-round loss to Cincinnati in 2009 EA Sports Maui Invitational, loss to West Virginia).
– Vanderbilt has now made a three-pointer in 765 consecutive games, a streak that began in 1986, the first year of the three-point line.
– Vanderbilt led one time, and that was in the early goings of the game. West Virginia took the lead for good at the 17:33 mark in the first half. Vanderbilt tied the game four other times, but could never regain the lead.
– West Virginia held their biggest lead of the game (40-26) with 1:45 to go in the first half. The Mountaineers led at the half, 44-33.
– Commodores went on a 21-10 to open the second half to tie the game at 54 with 9:07 to go. WVU responded with a 9-0 run to take a 63-54 lead with 7:20 to go.
– Vanderbilt once again responded, rallying back to tie the game at 68 at the 2:01 mark behind a 3-pointer by John Jenkins.
– West Virginia took the lead again, but Vanderbilt tied it at 71 with 33 seconds to play.
– WVU’s Casey Mitchell then hit the game-winning three with the shot-clock expiring with three seconds to go. Vanderbilt’s Rod Odom had one last look from three as time expired but missed off the back rim.
– The Commodores shot 32.8% from the floor, compared to 36.4% for West Virginia. Both teams also struggled from the perimeter, with Vanderbilt making 26.9% of its shots and West Virginia 28.6%. All six of WVU’s threes came from Mitchell, who led all scorers with 30 points.
– Mitchell was the first person to go for more than 30 against VU since March 12, 2010 at the SEC Tournament when Georgia’s Travis Leslie scored 34. Mitchell was also the first to make six threes in a game since Kenny Boynton of Florida hit six on January 9, 2010.
– Both teams tied in the rebounding column. Vanderbilt had 13 turnovers, compared to 10 for West Virginia. – A total of 73 free throws were attempted by both teams Friday. The Commodores were 26-of-34 for the day, while West Virginia was 28-for-39. Fifty-four fouls were called in the game.
– West Virginia outscored Vanderbilt, 22-18 in the paint, 19-9 off of turnovers, 10-8 on second chance points, and 4-2 on fast break points. The Commodores outscored WVU, 19-9, in points in the paint.
– Vanderbilt is now 24-38 all-time against the Big East.
Player notes:
– John Jenkins led the team with 27 points, a career-high, and was 6-for-19 from the floor, 5-of-11 from three, and a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. The 19 field goal attempts was also a career-high, as were the 10 free throws made and attempted.
– Jeffery Taylor fouled out in 14 minutes and only tallied five points. The 14 minutes was the second fewest played of his career (12, Manhattan, 12/30/09).
– Festus Ezeli scored eight points and grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds. He also added two blocks.
– True freshman Rod Odom scored a career-high 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. The points total, field goals made and attempted are all career-bests. Odom also played a career-high 23 minutes.
– Brad Tinsley scored in double figures with 10 points. He also added three assists.
– Lance Goulbourne logged a career-high 29 minutes against WVU. He scored three points, had seven rebounds, had one assist, and two blocks.
