Vanderbilt Tennis Players Garner Pre-Season Attention

Nashville, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s and women’s tennis teams are again well represented in their respective pre-season rankings, released this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The two squads combined to post eight athletes in the nation’s top 100.

On the men’s side, senior Chad Harris enters the fall season ranked No. 6 in the country, the highest pre-season ranking ever achieved by a Commodore men’s tennis player. Harris became Vanderbilt’s third all-american a season ago while helping to lead the Commodores to the NCAA Finals. At No. 35, junior Matt Lockin is Vanderbilt’s second top 40 player. Junior Scott Brown rounds out the ranked Commodores at No. 73.

In doubles, Harris and Brown will team up as the eighth-ranked team in the country. The duo posted a 15-4 mark last season en route to an appearance in the NCAA Doubles Tournament.

For the women, four student-athletes find themselves in the ITA’s top 100. Seniors Aleke Tsoubanos (50th) and Kelly Schmandt (58th), junior Audra Falk (91th) and sophomore Ashley Schellhas (85th) all enter the fall schedule among the ranks of the nation’s elite. The returnees are joined by 2003 ITA Summer Circuit Player of the Year Amanda Fish.

Tsoubanos, an all-american in doubles last season with 2003 graduate Sarah Riske, will team up with Falk this season. That tandem has been ranked No. 11 in the nation, while the duo of Schmandt and junior Annie Menees have garnered the No. 45 position.

The men’s fall season begins this weekend at the MTSU Fall Invitational while the women will start play at Furman University on the last weekend of September.
