Pregame Notes
· Vanderbilt is in its 121st year of organized football.
· The Commodores wore black pants with black uniform tops.
· Vanderbilt won the toss and deferred until the second half.
· It was 59 degrees at kickoff.
· The attendance was 37,017
Team Notes
· Today marked the 107th meeting between the two schools.
· Vanderbilt trails in the all-time series 28-73-5
· The last time Vanderbilt beat Tennessee in Nashville was November 27, 1982
· The Commodores have now lost five straight against the Volunteers
· The last coach to beat Tennessee during their debut season was Fred Pancoast, who led the Commodores to a 17-14 victory on November 29, 1975.
· Vanderbilt has not won consecutive games against Tennessee since they won six straight from 1920 to 1926.
· This is the fifth time in the series that both coaches are in their first seasons. Vanderbilt won in 22-0 in 1901 and 1904 while Tennessee won in 1953 and 1963.
· Vanderbilt did not have a penalty in the first half.
· Vanderbilt’s 17-play field-goal drive to close out the first half was the longest scoring drive of the the season. The previous high was a 13-play touchdown drive against Ole Miss on September 18.
· Vanderbilt had multiple interceptions for the first time since recording two against Ole Miss on September 18.
· Vanderbilt had a field goal blocked with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter, the first time an opponent has blocked a Commodore field goal since Kentucky on November 15, 2008.
· The Commodores have now had fewer penalties than their opponent four times.
· For the fourth time this season, six different players had a rushing attempt for the Commodores.
· Vanderbilt is now 0-6 on the year when the opponent scores first.
· When trailing heading into the fourth quarter, Vanderbilt is now 0-9.
Individual Notes
· Cornerback Casey Hayward is the team’s active leader with 23 consecutive starts.
· Chris Marve made his 34th start of his career.
· Kenard Reeves is making his second consecutive start and third of the year.
· Wesley Tate entered the game with 12:13 remaining in the third quarter.
· Jared Funk entered the game with 11:39 remaining in the game.
Offense
· Brandon Barden has now had a reception in every game this season.
· Tray Herndon set a career-high at Vanderbilt with four receptions. His last catch came against Arkansas on October 30.
· Freshman Jordan Matthews had a career-high five receptions on the night. Matthews only had three receptions heading into the game.
· Jordan Matthews recorded his third touchdown of the year late in the fourth quarter.
· All three touchdowns recorded by Jordan Matthews this season have been tossed by Jared Funk in the fourth quarter.
· Jared Funk had a career-high 146 passing yards, topping his previous best of 100 yards against Eastern Michigan on October 9.
Defense
· Johnell Thomas recorded his second sack of the season in the first quarter.
· Casey Hayward made his sixth interception of the season when he picked off a Tyler Bray pass on the Commodores five yard line and took it back 13 yards late in the second quarter.
· The six interceptions by Casey Hayward are second in the SEC.
· Hayward’s six interceptions are the most by a Commodore since D.J. Moore posted six in 2007 and 2008.
· Only three Commodores have had more than six interceptions in a season. Ralph Oaks had seven in 1975, Thomas Wingfield had eight in 1973, and Leonard Coleman had eight in 1982.
· Sean Richardson had seven tackles in the first half.
· Colt Nichter’s five tackles tied a career-high set against Connecticut on October 2.
· With 13:36 remaining in the third quarter, Vanderbilt punted into Tennessee territory when Eric Samuels forced his first career fumble and Dexter Daniels recovered it on the Tennessee 20-yard line.
· Freshman Kenny Ladler made his first career-interception in the third quarter with 10:47 remaining.
Special Teams
· With Vanderbilt down 14-3, Ryan Fowler missed a 25-yard field goal, his second miss of the season and first since Northwestern on September 4.
· Ryan Fowler ended the night 1-3, marking the most attempts of his season.
· Richard Kent set the Vanderbilt record for most punts in a season with 83.
