Vanderbilt 77 Southern Indiana 40
November 8, 2010
Vanderbilt Coach Kevin Stallings
On the game:
I certainly think the story of tonight was our defense. Even while our offense was really stagnant, our defense was really, really, really good. If you can play defense that way then that’s a good thing. They’re a better team, they played Illinois to a 9 point game last week, and it might have been closer than that. I had absolutely no thoughts that our game would end up like this.
On creating turnovers:
Some of it was length. Some of it was just them throwing it out of bounds like we did. Some of them I’m sure their coach would feel like were unforced but I thought that we defended well.
On the offense:
I’d like us to shoot it better. Our shooting numbers in the two games certainly don’t reflect what our shooting numbers have been in practice. Our three perimeter guys and Lance have shot the fire out of it in practice so hopefully that comes forth at some point.
Southern Indiana Coach Rodney Watson
On the game
“I’ll begin by saying for those of you who cover Vanderbilt, you’re going to have a lot of fun this year. That was a very impressive practice game.”
On Vanderbilt’s Defense
“They kept us on one side of the floor. It was a real key for us since we were hoping to get the ball reversed, and their style of defense is very underestimated because they do a terrific job of guarding the arc and keeping the ball on one side. If they do that in the SEC there are going to be a lot of happy nights in this building and other buildings as well.”
Junior guard Brad Tinsley
On the game:
“I thought we played very good defense tonight. We didn’t do very good guarding the ball, the first half especially. Guys got in the lane, but that’s what’s so key about having two big guys in the lane, Festus and Steve, to contest a lot of guys’ shots and if they don’t block it then they’re there to get the rebound.”
On the game changing dunk in the first half:
“We had a really key run there at the end of the first half and that really set the tone for us. It’s always good to go out on a good note in the first half and take that as motivation for the second half.”
Junior forward Jeffery Taylor
On poor rebounding in the first half:
“They really worked hard on offensive boards early in the first half and maybe we weren’t ready for how hard they were gonna go. We went into the locker room and that was really the emphasis, the coaches told us to box out and get the loose balls.”
On the difficulty of the first half:
“We weren’t really getting out on running because we were fighting to get defense boards. When we did get the rebound we were fighting against their set defense and that always makes it harder on the offense.”
