Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Team Finishes Fourth at SEC Championship ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA — Vanderbilt recorded its highest finish in program history by placing fourth at the SEC Men’s Golf Championships at the Sea Island Golf Course here Sunday. The Commodores, behind the strong play of junior Mark Donnell and freshman Luke List, posted a 281 total, the best score of the day and one of the best team performances of the tournament. “We had been on the verge of a break-through all spring but we had been struggling,” said Coach Press McPhaul. “We had good play from top to bottom all weekend. We had two key rounds in my opinion; one was Will Armstrong’s 72 yesterday and the other was Ben McClung’s 72 today. And Lance Goodson chipped in with a pair of 73’s — we finally didn’t have to count a high score. Donnell capped his strong championship with a three-under par 67 to tie Florida’s Matt Every for second place while List had his best round with a 69. Donnell’s 54-hole score was 208, just one shot shy of Georgia Bulldog Todd Brendan’s winning 207 total. The Commodores also had strong play from Ben McClung, who had a 72, and Lance Goodson, who shot a three-over 73. Will Armstrong closed out Vanderbilt performers with a 77. “We talked last night about what we had to do today to have a great day,” McPhaul continued. “Each player knew what he had to do to make it happen and that was our focus. We decided to play more aggressively into the greens and it paid off.” Final Team Standings Vanderbilt Climbs to 7th After Second Round of SEC Men’s Golf Championship ST.
