Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Team Completes Play at Hyatt/Dorado Beach Intercollegiate in Sixth Position The Vanderbilt men’s golf squad, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Press McPhaul, completed play at the Hyatt/Dorado Beach Intercollegiate in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in sixth-place after a final round 290 gave them a three-day total of 891. Baylor grabbed the team title by nine strokes over Kentucky (877) with three rounds of 298-284-286=868. Kasper Jorgensen (72-68-70=210) of host school Georgia State nabbed individual medalist honors by one shot over Southern Miss’ Matt Wofford (69-73-69=211) and by two shots over John Holmes of Kentucky (72-71-69=212). Team Scores Unofficial Individual Scores Vanderbilt’s Luke List Sets School-Record with a Nine-Under Par 63 at Hyatt/Dorado Beach Intercollegiate Vanderbilt freshman Luke List, the Southeastern Conference’s reigning Golfer of the Week, shot a second round, nine-under par 63 at the Hyatt/Dorado Beach Intercollegiate to set a new Commodore 18-hole record. The Ringgold, Ga., native carded nine birdies and nine pars, during a bogey-free tour of the par-72, 6,980-yard layout, to tie the course record at the Dorado Beach Golf Club in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The previous school record of 65 had been shared by both List, who fired a 65 during the final round at the Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate during the 2003 fall season, and former VU All-America Brandt Snedeker, who carded two 65’s in winning the 2002 Mason Rudolph individual title. The Black and Gold squad currently sits in fourth position at the Hyatt/Dorado Beach after firing a second round total of 288 (E). The ‘Dores trail Georgia State by two shots, Kentucky, yesterday’s first-round leader, by four strokes and the tournament leader Baylor by 12 shots heading into round three on Tuesday. Sophomore Will Armstrong, after carding a 4-over 76 during opening round play, established a new 18-hole personal record with a 1-under par 73 on Monday. He now stands at 5-over par 149. The Austin, Texas, native had established his low-round mark of 75 during last weekend’s opening 18 holes of the Seminole Intercollegiate. Junior Ben McClung (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) followed yesterday’s 78 with a 3-over par 75 to sit at 9-over par 153, while fellow junior Mark Donnell (Mobile, Ala.) is at 10-over par 154 after scores of 75-79. Lance Goodson, a junior from Birmingham, Ala., carded a 5-over 77 on Monday for a two-day score of 13-over par 156. Hosted by Georgia State University in conjunction with the Dorado Beach Golf Club, the par 72, 6,980-yard layout will serve as a stern test for seven schools: Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Baylor, Old Dominion and Southern Miss. The Black and Gold opened the 2004 spring campaign with an 18th-place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate, before rebounding to rate third at last week’s Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla. Golfers will tee off at 7:40 a.m. each day with the second and third rounds scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, March 8-9. |
