Vanderbilt head men’s golf coach Scott Limbaugh has announced his team’s 2013-14 schedule, with his Commodore squad set to take part in some of the nation’s best collegiate tournaments and on the world’s most renowned golf courses.
“We are really excited about this year’s schedule as it should be a great and an exciting test for our team,” said Limbaugh. “We have added seven new events to our schedule which we feel will give our team the opportunity to compete against the nation’s top players on some of the world’s best courses. The schedule should help give us an opportunity to be successful in postseason play.”
The Commodores once again open their schedule on a pair of the world’s most picturesque golf tracks at the Carmel Cup on the Monterrey Peninsula in California, where the team will play two rounds at Pebble Beach Golf Club and one at Spyglass Hills Golf Club. Following the trip to California, Vanderbilt returns home to play in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Challenge Cup at the Golf Club of Tennessee, an event that will feature five teams from the SEC and five from the ACC. The 10 teams will play 54 holes of stroke play and then 18 holes of match play September 20-22.
Other fall tournaments include two new events for the Commodores, the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate on October 7-8 in Birmingham, Ala., and the Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla., November 4-5, and return to one of the nation’s most prestigious collegiate tournaments in the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational at the Isleworth Golf Club in Windermere, Fla., October 20-22.
“One of our new events that we are excited about is the Dick’s Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup at The Golf Club of Tennessee,” said Limbaugh. “This is a unique tournament that involves the top teams in the SEC versus the top teams from the ACC with the final round of match play being televised on ESPN to see which conference comes out on top. Following the CCC we will head to Birmingham, Ala., for another new event, The Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will feature twelve of the top teams in the country and will be played at Old Overton Golf Club.”
The spring will begin at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., February 15-16, one of four new tournaments for Vanderbilt in the spring. During spring break, the team heads to Los Cabos, Mexico, to take part in the Querrencia Cabo Intercollegiate March 2-4, and then heads to Naples, Fla., and the Talis Park Challenge when they return from Mexico. The Commodores will then take part in their own Mason Rudolph Championship April 4-6, the first time the tournament has been held in the spring, and then close their regular season in Jackson, Miss., at the Old Waverly Golf Club for the Bancorp South Intercollegiate April 14-15.
The SEC Championship, which will be contested April 25-27, will once again be held at the Sea Island Golf Club. NCAA Regionals begin at various sites around the country May 15.
“We begin the spring in another new event at the prestigious Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.,” said Limbaugh. “The event will be played on the Mark Bostick Golf Course designed by Donald Ross. During spring break, we will head to Los Cabos, Mexico for the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. We will be playing Querencia Golf Club, a Tom Fazio design, which is the number one course in Mexico. The Mason Rudolph Championship will be played in the spring this year and going forward. We are thrilled to be hosting the event on the Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course again this year.”
The Commodores, who have been very productive on the amateur golf scene this summer, will report to campus later this month.
