NASHVILLE — The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team used a second half rally to defeat the Stanford Cardinal, 10-9, Monday at the VU Lacrosse Complex. Freshman Margie Curran scored five points for the Commodores on four goals and an assist, all coming in the second half.

Senior goalie Ashley Bastinelli made nine saves on the day, including six in the second half as Vanderbilt outscored Stanford, 9-4, in the final 33 minutes.

Junior Kate Hickman scored Vanderbilt’s first two goals, then completed her hat-trick with a game-tying goal in the 54th minute. Curran’s fourth goal of the contest, which came after a draw control by freshman Sasha Cielak, was the game-winner for the Commodores.

Curran would also control the final draw of the contest, as Vanderbilt ran out the final five minutes of the clock. Curran had a game-high five draw controls in the match.

Stanford held a 5-3 lead at halftime. The Cardinal notched five straight goals after Hickman opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Nina Pantano and Liz Piselli led Stanford with three goals each.

Tallies by Hickman and sophomore Jennifer Tapscott brought the Commodore within two at the break. The teams traded goals to open the second half before Vanderbilt regained the lead at 7-6 after three consecutive goals from Curran, Tapscott and junior Bryn Sedlacek.

Stanford managed to tie the game two more times, and took the lead in the 52nd minute on Pantano’s third goal. But Tapscott assisted Hickman on a break-away goal less than two minutes later, and Curran scored her 10th goal of the season to give the Commodores the 10-9 victory.

Sophomore defender Molly Frew led Vanderbilt with five ground balls on the day, with senior Meg Spies collecting three. For the Cardinal, Piselli picked up four ground balls, while Kelsey Twist controlled four draws.

Vanderbilt (3-4) looks to even its record this weekend as it travels to New Hampshire for a match-up with the Wildcats on Friday, April 1.
