Vanderbilt Lacrosse Draws Loyola In NCAA First Round 5-10-04

5/10/2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team will begin its second NCAA Tournament appearance with a trip to face fourth-seeded Loyola College in Baltimore, Md., at Diana Geppi-Aikens Field on Thursday, May 13. The time of the match is yet to be determined.

The Commodores (10-5), regular season champions of the American Lacrosse Conference, received the league’s first-ever automatic qualification into the tournament. Vanderbilt also won the league title in 2002, but had to wait through the NCAA Selection Show to hear of its first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. This year, the only suspense was who the Dores would be matched up against.

The Greyhounds (14-3) have been ranked as high as No. 3 in the country this season by the IWLCA. They closed the regular season Saturday with a 14-11 over Syracuse. Thursday’s matchup will be the first between Vanderbilt and Loyola.

Vanderbilt holds a 6-4 all-time record in matches played in the state of Maryland. Of Vanderbilt’s 25-woman roster, more than half (14) call the Old Line State home. The Commodores top seven scorers (seniors Michelle Allen, Lauren Peck, Jess Roguski and Kelly Devlin, junior Meg Spies, sophomore Kate Hickman and freshman Kendall Thrift) all hail from Maryland.
