Updated Singles ‘A’ BracketUpdated Singles ‘B’ BracketUpdated Doubles BracketVanderbilt men’s tennis kicked off its season on Friday with day one of the annual Commodore Scramble and returns from the first day of competition were positive.
The Commodores opened up the day with a pair of wins in round one of doubles play, including Lachlan McPhee and Billy Rowe defeating Alabama’s Sam Fischer and Zhe Zhou, 6-3. McPhee and Rowe entered the matchup ranked No. 16 in the Oracle/ITA Men’s Doubles Rankings. McPhee and Rowe continued their strong play in round two of doubles with a 6-1 victory over Auburn’s Carles Sarrio and Michael Durham.
Vanderbilt’s other victorious doubles team was a pair of freshmen, George Harwell and Maxwell Freeman, both of whom made their Commodore debuts on Friday. Harwell and Freeman defeated Block/Csonka (LSU) in round one, 6-2, and then won a 7-6 decision over Laubser/Nguyen (AUB) in round two.
On the singles side, Vanderbilt racked up an 8-1 overall record in round one. The list of Commodores to advance in the winner’s bracket includes No. 25 Daniel Valent, Panu Virtanen and Billy Rowe in the ‘A’ bracket and Harwell, Freeman, Tate Allwardt, Adam Sraberg and Alex Ross in the ‘B’ bracket.
The Commodore Scramble will start back up at 9 a.m. on Saturday, beginning with round two of singles play and then followed by round three of doubles matches at approximately 11:30 a.m., which will be followed by a break for lunch. Action will resume at 2:30 p.m. with the third round of singles to conclude day two. Check the attached brackets at the top of the page to view tomorrow’s matchups.
