FORT WORTH, Texas – The fifth-ranked Commodores are in eighth place with a team score of 586 (293-293) at the inaugural Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, home to the PGA Tour’s Crowne Plaza Invitational, with senior Hunter Stewart leading the way after firing an even-par, 140 (68-72), in his first two rounds.
This week’s field at the NCI features seven of the top 30 teams in men’s collegiate golf.
“Hunter was really solid all day long,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I think he made one or two swings that he’d like to get back, but I really thought he competed well. Overall as a team, I thought that although the scoreboard doesn’t look great, we really hung in there on the back nine finishing up this 36-hole day, and that’s what we talked about. We just didn’t play good enough golf. We didn’t play to our standards all day long and dug ourselves a big hole, but I have a good feeling our guys will be ready to come out and compete and play a little better tomorrow.
Commodore Scores
Stewart’s 140 led all Vanderbilt players, with junior Carson Jacobs six strokes back of Stewart with a total of 146 (73-73). Jacobs is in a tie for 19th on the individual leader board. Other Commodore totals on the day included Theo Humphrey’s 150 (77-73), a 151 (76-75) from Ben Fogler, and a 152 (76-76) from Zack Jaworski.
“I got off to a bad start bogeying my first hole and I just made up my mind to right the ship and compete for my team,” said Stewart. “I just played really solid and made a few nice birdies in the middle of my back nine of my first round and didn’t finish the way I liked to at the end of my 18. I started off slow again in the second round, but righted the ship and finished the back nine at one-under, and I was pretty proud of that.”
Overall Leaders
Pac-12 member Oregon leads the team standings with a score of eight-over par, 568, with the Ducks also having the individual leader in Thomas Lin, who shot a nine-under par, 131 (66-65).
Oregon leads Washington by two strokes, and Lin leads the Huskies’ Cheng-Tsung Pan by two.
Final Round
The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday morning at the Colonial Country Club.
