ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 3 ranked/seeded Ryan Lipman and Gonzales Austin of the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team fell in the 2014 NCAA Doubles quarterfinals on Saturday, ending their run for the Commodore’s third national championship.
The Vandy duo fell 6-4, 6-4 to ninth-ranked Hunter Harrington and Dominique Maden of Clemson.
Both teams were able to hold for much of the match. Clemson only picked up two breaks the whole match, however they clinched both the first and second set, sending the Tigers to the semifinals.
Lipman and Austin finish the 2014 season as the first ever Commodore doubles team to earn All-American honors and hold both the single season and career wins record by a team, 30 and 36, respectively.
Lipman ends his career was one of the most decorated players in program history. The Nashville native is a three-time All-American, four-time All-SEC recipient and holds the Vanderbilt record for combined wins with 174.
Austin will come back for his senior season a two-time All-American and three-time All-SEC honoree. He holds career records of 75-37 in singles and 60-35 in doubles.
Austin and Lipman’s run in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships caps off a great season for the Commodores.
As a team, Vanderbilt picked up wins against Tennessee, Florida and Georgia, made it to the SEC tournament semifinals, sent two players to the NCAA round of 16 in singles and a doubles team to the NCAA quarterfinals. All of which were firsts since 2006 and earlier.
