PHILADELPHIAâ€â€Vanderbilt lacrosse struggled to find its offensive rhythm Wednesday afternoon, losing a road conference game to Temple by the final score of 10-5.
The Commodores (8-7, 3-4 BIG EAST) posted their lowest scoring output of the season, dropping a low-scoring affair against the Owls (9-6, 4-3 BIG EAST).
Vanderbilt trailed 6-2 at halftime after posting its lowest-scoring half of the season. Temple outshot the Commodores 15-6 in the first half. Grace Bell started in goal, making six saves in the first 30 minutes.
Madison Foglio stepped into the cage for the second half, making her first appearance in over a month for the Dores. Foglio made five saves in the period, but the Commodore offense could not engineer a comeback.
VU shifted the field and outshot Temple 23-15 in the second stanza, but could not cut the Owls’ lead to less than four.
Junior midfielder Julie Blaze led the Dores with a goal, an assist and three ground balls. Freshman midfielder Maddie Miller scored her first collegiate point, assisting on Hadley Brown‘s goal with 6:55 left in regulation. Melanie Becker, Gwyn Devin and Elizabeth Scarrone also scored goals for the Commodores.
Sophomore attacker Emily Mathewson earned an assist in the game, giving her 64 points on the season and the highest single-season points total by a Vanderbilt player since 2010, when Sarah Downing scored 74 points for the Dores.
Despite securing that milestone, Mathewson was held without a goal for the first time this season, while senior attacker Kayla Peterson went scoreless for just the second time this year.
Vanderbilt returns to action Sunday afternoon at UConn for another pivotal BIG EAST battle. Opening draw is at noon CT from Storrs, Conn.
