Vanderbilt Defeats Western Kentucky, 3-1 9/21/2003
Nashville, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 3-1, in rainy conditions in the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon. Vanderbilt is now 4-2-2, while Western Kentucky is 3-4-0. Vanderbilt scored first when junior Molly Wilson lobbed in a shot from 20 yards out just under the cross bar at the 6:45 mark. Senior Laura Hershenow scored 17 minutes later when her 30-yard shot hit the crossbar and rolled to the back of the goal. The Commodores led 2-0 at halftime. The Hilltoppers score came at the 46:48 mark when Betsy Duncan shot the ball into an open goal after VU’s goalkeeper Esther Thompson lost control of the ball. Six minutes later, senior Michelle Bruntlett floated the ball over Western Kentucky’s goalkeeper from 30-yards out on an assist from Molly Wilson. The Commodores totaled 33 shots, including 13 on goal, led by Jennifer Lewis with nine. Esther Thompson played the entire game in goal and totaled six saves allowing the one goal. WKU’s Becky Kasper totaled seven saves allowing three goals playing 60:36, while Melissa Baily played 29:24 and numbered three saves. “It was great to be back home,” Head Coach Ronnie Coveleski Hill said. “I think playing at home gave us some energy and it showed as we scored five goals this weekend. Both games were a tuneup for our conference schedule which starts next week. The most exciting part of our confefence schedule is that we have three consecutive home games to begin conference play.” Vanderbilt opens Southeastern Conference action Friday (Sept. 26) when it hosts Kentucky at 6 pm.
