VANDERBILT DEFEATS GEORGIA 2-0 TO MOVE INTO SEMIFINALS 11/3/2005 Vanderbilt advanced into the Southeastern Conference tournament semifinals for the second straight year with a 2-0 win over Georgia in women’s soccer action Thursday night. Megan Habig The fourth-seeded Commodores (16-3-1) recorded their 15th shutout of the season and avenged a regular season loss to fifth- seed Georgia. VU will play No. 1 seed Tennessee tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. for the rights to go to the tourney finals. “It was really exciting to see the intensity and hard work in the game,” said SEC Co-Coach of the Year Ronnie Coveleskie Hill. “Georgia did a great job and put a lot of pressure on us in the second half.” Senior midfielder Meghan Habig put Vanderbilt on the board at the 38:18 mark, when she scored on a header from eight yards out off an assist from Sarah Dennis. Junior Kim Perkins added an insurance goal for the Commodores in the 53rd minute, when she scored on a penalty kick due to a handball by a Georgia player in the box. “We were able to exhale and catch our breath a little when Kim scored the second goal off of the PK.” VU goalkeeper Tyler Griffin, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, established a new single season conference record with her 13th solo shutout of the year. Vanderbilt used a solid team defensive effort to control the contest, and out shot Georgia 6-4 with no Bulldog shots on goal. “Our team believes in defending as a unit, and that it takes hard work from all 11 for us to be successful,” said Hill. “It is great to get into the semifinals for the second year in a row. We will enjoy this win tonight and get ready to face the Lady Volunteers tomorrow.” |
