SAN ANTONIO – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team ended Round 2 of the Valero Texas Collegiate in third place on the team leaderboard after the Commodores shot 4-over 292 during their second go-around on the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio.
Vandy sits at 1-under 575 after posting scores of 283-292 through two rounds of play in the Lone Star State. The Commodores head into Monday’s finale just three strokes off the lead, as Vanderbilt has a total of four golfers inside the top 25 on the player leaderboard after 36 holes of play.
“It was a day where we never had much momentum and when we did get some, we gave it right back,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I thought the guys battled and fought, but when you are playing a challenging course like this you have to play with discipline and focus. We have to learn from these moments because that’s what helps with growth. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for us to see if we can compete closer to our standards. I’m excited to see how we respond and who steps up.”
Graduate student William Moll and senior Cole Sherwood led the way for Dores in Round 2 of the Valero Texas Collegiate, as each golfer carded even par 72. Moll collected his second eagle of the tournament on Sunday, as he shot 2-under on the par-4 No. 11 hole. That sparked the Houston, Texas native to card 3-under on the back nine, as he moved into a tie for 10th place on the player leaderboard with a two-day score of 1-under 143.
Meanwhile, Sherwood’s second-round performance put him in a tie with teammate Jackson Van Paris for 14th overall, as the pair of Vanderbilt golfers head into Round 3 at even par 144. Van Paris gave the Commodores their third eagle of the tournament by finishing 2-under on the par-4 No. 17 hole.
Graduate student Matthew Riedel heads into Monday’s finale inside the top 25 on the player leaderboard, as his 36-hole score of 2-over 146 puts him in a tie for 24th. Junior Gordon Sargent sits just outside the top 25 on the player leaderboard, as he enters Round 3 at 3-over 147.
Vanderbilt goes into the third round of the Valero Texas Collegiate just three strokes off TCU, who leads the field at 4-under 572. TCU’s Gustav Frimodt and Baylor’s Johnny Keefer sit atop the leaderboard after 36 holes of play in San Antonio, as each golfer has carded 6-under 138.
The third round of the Valero Texas Collegiate begins this Monday on the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio. Tee times are set for 8 a.m., with Vanderbilt teeing off between 9:10-9:50 a.m. Fans can follow all of the action at GolfStat.com.
