AUBURN, ALA.- The Commodores kicked-off their 2015 SEC Swimming and Diving championship journey Tuesday morning with time trails, the 200-medley relay, and the 800 freestyle relay. The 2015 SEC championships are hosted by Auburn University at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center. This meet is one of the premiere events in collegiate swimming, where it is not uncommon for a student-athlete to swim one of the top times in the nation. Vanderbilt continued off of last year’s successes, breaking two school records.

SEC Day 1

“That was a good start to the week for us,” said head coach Jeremy Organ. “I think our expectations were a little higher, but overall we’re very happy with our swims and where we are. We’re excited to start off tomorrow morning and have more great swims. Tonight we just plan on getting some good food, sleep and regroup for tomorrow.”

The `Dores came out on fire Tuesday morning, and hope to keep up the success throughout the rest of the week’s action. During the morning’s 50 freestyle time trail sophomore Kayla Moran broke the first of what the Commodores hope to be many shattered school records. Moran swam in with a time of 23.43, breaking her previous record of 23.48 which was set at last year’s 2014 SEC Champs.

In the first final event of the night, the 200-medly relay team of Chrissy Oberg, Kara Lucenti, Breanna Sapienza, and Kayla Moran. The team came in 12th place at a time of 1:42.28; almost breaking the school record established at last season’s SECs.

“I really think we should have been a little faster in the 200 relay. I think we over swam that one a little, but it’s day one and we’ve got four more days of racing.”

The Commodores capped off their first day of SECs the same way they began them, breaking a school record. The 800 freestyle relay team of Elly Faulkner, Summer Brown, Carrie Bencic, and Hannah Martin demolished the record set at last year’s SECs, swimming in at a time of 7:21.72. The `Dores were almost 10 seconds faster than their season-high which was set at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
