Vanderbilt and Furman Battle to Exhibition Draw

8/17/2004

Nashville, Tenn. – In a hard-fought effort against Southern Conference defending champion Furman University, the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team ended the game in a scoreless tie with the Lady Paladins.

The game was dominated by outstanding defense as the ball sailed from one end to the other throughout the contest. Vanderbilt was able to get off 19 shots on goal while Furman totaled four. There was not an overtime period played in the scrimmage.

Scoring opportunities came for Vanderbilt towards the end of the second half when Ashley Duffy kicked a shot that knocked Furman goalie Andie Hinshaw out of the way. In the hustle, a Furman player accidentally knocked the ball towards her own goal only to have it hit the post and bounce out giving Furman the chance to regroup.

Gaining momentum, the Commodores were able to keep the ball on their end of the field for the last remaining minutes of the game only to fall just short of scoring a goal before the final whistle sounded.

The Commodores travel to Samford for more exhibition action Saturday, (Aug. 21) at 7 pm. The season home opener for the Commodores is Aug. 27 (Friday) against Wake Forest at 7 pm at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
