UAB Defeats Vanderbilt, 2-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team completed play in the 2004 UAB Nike Classic on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

The Commodores lost their first game on Friday night to the University of Minnesota losing 1-0.

UAB jumped on the board early as senior forward Tara Kidwell scored just 1:14 into the match to give the Blazers an early 1-0 advantage. Kidwell beat a Vanderbilt defender and snuck the ball into the right corner of the net past goalkeeper Tyler Griffin.

Vanderbilt’s Amy Baumann had a chance to score earlier in the match for the Commodores, but UAB goalkeeper Katie Forbis made a save to keep Vanderbilt off the board. Baumann was all alone just shy of the net and unloaded a shot, but Forbis made the critical save to preserve the 1-0 lead. The Commodores also had a chance late in the match to tie, but Forbis saved the ball with 1:50 remaining in the match. Each team registered 10 shots on goal on Sunday, but UAB held a 22-16 advantage in overall shots.

The Commodores will return to the road next Friday as they face the University Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. The game is next Friday, September 10 at 5:00pm (EST).
