Colwell, DeBeer set to compete in U.S. Open

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Two Vanderbilt student-athletes are set to travel to Atlanta to compete in the Toyota U.S. Open beginning Friday at the Georgia Tech McAuley Aquatic Center.

Making their U.S. Open debuts, sophomores Lizzy Colwell and Tonner DeBeer will race among 1,300 other swimmers including 27 Olympic medalists.

After winning both the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke at the TYR ‘85 Invite, Colwell prepares to compete in the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke at the Open.

“I’m so excited to be able to compete at this meet with some of the fastest swimmers in the world,” Colwell said. “It’s going to be great competition and very encouraging. It means a lot to be able to represent Vanderbilt.”

DeBeer, who notched a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle at the TYR ’85 Invite, will compete in the 100-meter backstroke and 100-meter butterfly.

Prelims will begin at 9 a.m. CT Friday and results can be found HERE.
