NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis head coach Scott Brown announced Friday that two individuals—Danil Panarin and Hugo Coquelin—have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the program in the spring.
“I am beyond excited to have Danil and Hugo joining us in January. Not only are they great tennis players, but they have the character and values that we are looking for in our recruits and they have the ingredients in place to be successful at Vanderbilt both in the classroom and on the tennis court and beyond,” said Brown. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the impact both Danil and Hugo have on the team when they arrive in January. Welcome Danil and Hugo, Fight Dores!”
Panarin, who hails from Moscow, Russia, has climbed as high as No. 20 in the International Tennis Federation junior rankings and currently stands at a career-best No. 1,102 in the ATP rankings, as he has qualified for the junior draw at every Grand Slam tournament in the last year. In addition to earning first-round victories at the U.S. Open and Australian Open Junior Championships, Panarin advanced to the quarterfinals of the junior tournament at Criciuma and the semifinals at Porto Alegre—both held in Brazil—earlier in the 2023 season.
He reached the quarterfinal stage or later at eight of 17 events in 2022, including making it to the finals of tournaments contested in Svyatopetrivske, Ukraine, and Guadalajara, Mexico, while also winning his opening match at the U.S. Junior Open that summer. Panarin has won three singles titles and a doubles championship at the junior level since 2021, and he has also competed at the Junior Davis Cup.
Coquelin’s highest career ITF junior ranking has been No. 123 after advancing to the semifinals of the junior tournament at Loughborough, England, in December 2022. He opened that season by playing for the title at a junior event in Glasgow, Scotland, and would go on to reach at least the quarterfinals of three other tournaments that season.
Originally from Sevenoaks, England, Coquelin has competed in either singles or doubles at the Junior Wimbledon Championship each of the last three years and has won four junior doubles titles during that span. In 2021, he advanced to the finals of a junior tournament at Vierumaki, Finland, while also playing in the quarterfinals or later of three other events that summer.
