Twelve Commodores on opening day NFL rosters

Sept. 4, 2014

With the 2014 NFL season kicking off Thursday when Green Bay travels to Seattle, it’s time to take a look where former Commodores are at in the NFL.

Last weekend, all 32 NFL teams were mandated to trim their rosters to 53 active players. In addition to being placed on active rosters, some injured players were kept on PUP, NFI and IR lists. Lastly, each team assembled practice squads at the first of the week. This year the league increased practice squads from eight to 10 players.

With the rosters set heading into Week 1, Vanderbilt has 12 players in the NFL. Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler is the longest-tenured Commodore in the NFL, as he enters his ninth season.

Two former Commodores will be in action Thursday with Green Bay defensive backs Casey Hayward and Sean Richardson facing the Seahawks at 7:30 p.m. CT on NBC.

The Packers are one of three teams with multiple Commodores on their roster. Buffalo (Kenny Ladler and Chris Williams) and Cleveland (Ryan Seymour and Jonathan Krause) are the others.
