When Vanderbilt’s new athletic training room officially opened for business in February, it more than met expectations. The state-of-the-art facility in McGugin Center more than doubles the former facility’s capacity to just under 10,000 square feet.

The training room impacts all 350 student-athletes at Vanderbilt and provides them with a facility where they can receive the newest and most current treatment and rehab techniques to ensure their return to sport. Not only does the new facility provide more space, but it also allows the athletic training staff and team physicians to work more efficiently in helping the student-athletes maintain their well-being.

The centerpiece of the new space is the hydrotherapy room, featuring both hot and cold plunge tanks as well as an underwater treadmill pool with athlete-specific, programmable protocols and video recording capabilities. Additionally, three separate physician exam rooms, 12 new treatment tables, 12 pieces of cardio equipment, nine taping stations, two private treatment rooms, an abundance of brand new modalities and rehab equipment, a conference room, a staff locker room and more combine to make one of the most complete athletic training facilities in the country.

“We are very excited to be in our new athletic training room,” said Tom Bossung, Head Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine. “Seeing the looks and expressions on the faces of the kids and staff when we first opened our doors was very rewarding. They certainly appreciate the upgrades to our facility and we are all very thankful to those who have contributed in a multitude of ways to make this possible.”

With the relationship to the world-renowned Vanderbilt Medical Center, the staff of team physicians and athletic trainers who provide the outstanding and highly-specialized sports-medicine care to Vanderbilt’s athletes are excited to have a first-class facility to help those student-athletes recover and reach their full potential.
