Vanderbilt visits LSU for Monday matchup

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis looks for a bounce back tomorrow at LSU after dropping its SEC opener to Texas on Saturday.

With its 7-0 loss to the No. 4 Longhorns, Vanderbilt falls to 0-3 against top-25 opponents. LSU is 0-2, with losses to No. 22 NC State at ITA Kickoff Weekend and No. 9 Texas A&M. The Dores are 24-52-1 in the all-time series versus the Tigers, but did capture a 4-0 sweep in their most recent meeting last season. The victory was the first for Vandy over LSU since a 4-0 win in the 2018 SEC Tournament.

The match against Texas is the first time Vanderbilt was held winless at each position, in both singles and doubles, since a 7-0 defeat to Arkansas last March. No. 98-ranked junior Nathan Cox and freshman Pablo Martinez Gomez each notched sets against ranked Longhorn opponents but fell in third set tiebreakers. The No. 87-ranked tandem of Cox and senior Michael Ross, as well as freshmen pair Dylan Charlap and Callum Markowitz, remain unbeaten in dual match play. Charlap and Markowitz are on a seven match doubles win streak, with Cox and Ross just behind at four straight.

LSU suffered a 4-1 defeat to the Aggies in its conference opener on Saturday. No. 125-ranked senior Julien Penzlin, the only Tiger in the singles rankings, grabbed the lone victory of the match at No. 3 singles. The senior is among the leaders in the SEC for singles wins with 17, including a current match win streak of eight, and is 3-1 against ranked opponents. Penzlin, along with sophomore Aleksi Lofman, represent the Tigers in the doubles rankings at No. 27. The duo have produced four ranked wins this season and ride a four match win streak into Monday’s contest.

No. 34 Vanderbilt (7-3) seeks its first SEC win of the season tomorrow at No. 67 LSU (7-4), with play slated for a noon start. Live streaming will be available online, with live stats accessible here at the start of the match.
