WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Junior Hugo Coquelin remained flawless, No. 84 ranked sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez hung on in two tiebreak sets and the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team advanced three total Commodores on Saturday at the ITA Ohio Valley Championships hosted by Purdue.
Coquelin and freshman Jack Satterfield opened the day for the black and gold against No. 51 ranked and No. 1 seed Walid Ahouda and Hamza El Amine of Louisville. Neither team could gain separation and went to a match tiebreaker at 7-7. The Dores pulled away with a 7-5 set score to take the match and advance to the doubles round of 16. Senior Tighe Brunetti and freshman Cayden Wang made up the other remaining duo for Vanderbilt in a matchup against the No. 12 seed of Chattanooga’s Cortland Grove and Jakub Jupa. In an almost identical match that was also separated by two games, the Dores fell just short against Mocs in an 8-7 (5) final.
Singles followed with three fighting for a quarterfinals spot on Sunday. And after a doubles victory to begin the day, Coquelin was not finished. The junior opened singles play with another dominant win, defeating Nick Herdoiza from Xavier 6-2, 6-1. Martinez Gomez continued the momentum for Vandy, downing Purdue’s Juan David Velasquez 6-2, 6-3. No. 46 ranked junior Danil Panarin looked to pick up a third singles win on the day for the Dores but was held in check by Michael Andre of Indiana; the Hoosier held on versus the No. 2 singles seed with a 6-3, 6-3 result.
Both Coquelin and Martinez Gomez took the court once more in the singles round of 16. In Coquelin’s closest match thus far, Purdue’s No. 1 seeded Aleksa Krivokapic retired at 6-6 in the first set, giving Coquelin a quarterfinal berth. Martinez Gomez followed with a matchup against Ondrej Horak of Middle Tennessee. In another marathon of a match for Vanderbilt, the black and gold again came out on top. Martinez Gomez secured both tiebreak sets to defeat Horak 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) to move on to the quarterfinals along with Coquelin.
The doubles round of 16 begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. as Coquelin and Satterfield go up against Indiana’s No. 14 seeded pairing of Sam Scherer and Benjamin Pomeranets. A win moves Vanderbilt into the doubles quarterfinals, which will immediately follow the round of 16 matches at 9:45 a.m. Coquelin kicks off Sunday’s singles action at 11:45 a.m. versus Nour Fathalla of Purdue. Martinez Gomez is also slated for an 11:45 a.m. start and faces Louisville’s No. 10 seeded Walid Ahouda. The full tournament page for the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships is available online.
