Columbus, Ga. – Vanderbilt men’s golfers Matthew Riedel, Gordon Sargent, and Cole Sherwood have been named to the watch list for the 2024 Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel, as announced by Golf Channel and the Haskins Foundation Thursday.
Created in 1971, the Haskins Award is given annually to the most outstanding men’s college golfer, as voted on by players, coaches, and media members. Past winners include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, and the reigning winner, Ludvig Aberg.
Riedel, a graduate student who returned to Vanderbilt for his final year of collegiate golf, was GCAA Division I PING honorable mention All-American and a Golfweek honorable mention All-American during the 2022-23 season. The graduate student has picked up where he left off from a season ago, holding a stroke average of 69.27 through four fall tournaments. Riedel has posted three top-10 finishes this fall, which includes a fifth-place finish at the Valero Texas Collegiate to open the fall season. Riedel is also ranked sixth on the PGA Tour University rankings.
Sargent, the 2022 NCAA individual champion, is off to another strong start to open his junior season at Vanderbilt. Sargent held a team-best scoring average of 68.89 through three fall tournaments, having missed the St Andrews Links Collegiate due to representing the United States at the World Amateur Junior Team Championships in Abu Dhabi. Recently, Sargent earned his PGA Tour Card via the PGA Tour University program, though he is still slated to be back with the Commodores this spring. During the summer, Sargent was awarded the Mark H. McCormack Medal, given to the world’s top men’s amateur player. The junior has received exemptions into the 2024 U.S. Open and The Open Championship.
Sherwood has had a fabulous fall, that has seen him win the individual title at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational during the first week of October. Sherwood collected the second individual title of his illustrious collegiate career by winning a playoff against Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht to claim the victory at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational. The senior from Austin, Texas carded 7-under 203 to force an extra hole. In the playoff. Sherwood sunk a 6-foot putt to win the individual title and earn an exemption into the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club on the PGA Tour. This fall, the two-time All-American posted a scoring average of 69.73 through four tournaments. He also finished second at the St Andrews Links Collegiate, to help Vanderbilt capture the team title at the Home of Golf. Sherwood is currently No. 12 in the PGA Tour U. rankings.
The Vanderbilt men’s golf team got the 2023-24 season started on a high note during the fall campaign. The Commodores won the team title at three of the four events they played in. Cole Sherwood won the individual title at the Ben Hogan Collegiate, while Jackson Van Paris captured the individual title at the St Andrews Link Collegiate.
The Dores return to action in the spring, as they are set to compete at the Watersound Invitational on Feb. 19-21 in Panama City Beach, Florida.
