Three Commodores advance to main draw singles at USTA/ITA Regionals

NASHVILLE, TENN – Three Vanderbilt Commodores advance to the singles main draw at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted at Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center. Main draw doubles play begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. CT. First round of main draw singles will begin after the conclusion of doubles.

With inclement weather in Nashville, tournament play began inside with four Commodores vying for spots in the singles main draw. Pen Binet, Jeffrey Offerdahl, and Ryan Smith all advance and begin singles play Thursday after the conclusion of doubles. Freshman Tate Allwardt lost a hard fought battle to Louisville’s junior, Jeffrey Brown, who brought a solid serve throughout the match.

Of the three `Dores advancing, Ryan Smith faces Middle Tennessee State’s Dima Zyhmantovich. Offerdahl takes on the No. 4 seed out of MTSU, Ettore Zito. Sophomore Pen Binet takes on Kentucky’s Jerry Lopez tomorrow in the first round of main draw singles.

Commodores in Main Draw:
No. 9 Gonzales Austin is the No. 1 seed in the tournament, enjoying a bye into the second round of singles play.
No. 90 Rhys Johnson is the No. 6 seed in competition and has a bye.
Freshman, Daniel Valent, has a bye in the first round.
No. 16 seed Kris Yee has a bye in the first round and will begin in round two.
Junior, Suresh Eswaran, competes against Xavier’s Michael Moe in Thursday first round singles.
Baker Newman faces Austin Peay’s Manuel Montenegro Thursday.

SF and Final round – best of three sets; no-ad scoring; tie-break at 6 all; match tie-break for 3rd set
