The Vanderbilt “Spirit of Gold” Marching Band Announces a Motown Reunion 9-25-03 Nashville, Tenn., September 25, 2003– On Saturday, September 27th the Vanderbilt “Spirit of Gold” Marching Band will feature special guests and Motown legends Bob Babbitt and Robert Knight during the halftime show for the Vanderbilt v. Georgia Tech game. The halftime performance will include hits from the 1960s such as “Rescue Me,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” and the number one hit “Everlasting Love.” In 1967, Robert Knight recorded the original hit written by Buzz Cason and Mac Gaden, both artists from the Nashville area. Originally from Franklin, TN, Mr. Knight spent the earlier parts of his musical career in Middle Tennessee and later traveled throughout Europe performing Motown hits, where he had the honor of opening for such Motown icons as Aretha Franklin and Al Green. After spending several years performing, Mr. Knight decided to leave life on the road and moved back to the United States. Today, Mr. Knight is an employee at Vanderbilt University. From Marvin Gaye to Gladys Knight to Smokey Robinson, Mr. Babbitt can be heard on some of the most well-known Motown albums available. Mr. Babbitt has been in the Nashville area 16 years. In that time, he has become one of the premier bass recording artists. Unfortunately, only recently has Mr. Babbitt been able to enjoy the recognition that his talents should afford. The Spirit of Gold has the honor of performing with both artists during the halftime show. Mr. Babbitt will join the band in performing a Motown Medley. Mr. Knight, accompanied by the Spirit of Gold, will perform his unforgettable “Everlasting Love.” Joined by a cast of local celebrities such as Billy Adair, and Loy Hardcastle, Mr. Knight, Mr. Babbitt and the Spirit of Gold will put on a show to remember.
