BOSTON – The Vanderbilt lacrosse team fell in a hard fought battle to the Boston University Terriers, 14-13. The game capped off the Commodores’ non-conference schedule, as the ‘Dores travel to Florida to begin BIG EAST competition against the Gators on Friday.
“Unfortunately, we just didn’t play a 60 minute game,” said head coach Cathy Swezey. “And when we slowed down in the second half, BU took advantage. We will learn from this and get better.”
Tuesday’s game began with Jill Doherty giving VU the quick 2-1 lead, with back-to-back goals 16 seconds apart. The Commodores extended the lead off of a Mallory Schonk to Kelly Chandler connection, with the Dores leading scorer earning her 22nd goal.
BU had several chances to even the score, but Frankie Angeleri’s defense combined by Callahan Kent’s skill in the cage stopped the Terriers’ fast paced advances.
After a timeout called by Vandy, the Commodores backed off their rapid-fire offense halfway into the first half. The offensive change proved profitable as Doherty earned her second goal of the game off a sidearm shot, which flew high into the net right under the crossbar.
The Commodore defense held BU to nearly 20 minutes without an additional goal. But at nine minutes in the first half, BU spread it’s offense, allowing Adams to earn the Terrier’s their second goal off a screen.
Following the Terrier goal, two of VU’s main offensive threats extended the Commodore lead. After a fowl on Schonk, the senior set up in free position, and scored to give Vandy the 5-2 lead with 6:26 left. With Boston down a player, Vanderbilt earned the largest lead of the game at 6-2 with a goal by Chandler.
The Terriers quickly retaliated, still a man down, as Avery Donohue earned her fifth goal of the season to bring the score back to a three-goal Vandy lead, 6-3.
One minute later, Chandler put the ball away, securing her fifth hat trick of the season. The redshirt junior scored right as the terriers were about to get back to even strength. With VU prepared to stall until the end of the first half, the Terriers forced a turnover and scored with only 20 seconds left, 7-4.
Leaving most of the BU defense in the midfield, Kayla Peterson earned the last goal of the half off an odd angled shot off. Vanderbilt took an 8-4 lead going into the locker room.
After a long offensive possession to kick off the second half, Schonk scored her second goal of the competition and first of the second half.
BU reacted by earning three unanswered goals, 9-7. Emma Dagres finally responded with back-to-back goals of her own for the black and gold, breaking the BU streak, 11-7.
Maria Guerra, a BU defender, came forward and scored her first career goal to put the Terriers in range, 11-9 with less than 11 minutes left. In 14 seconds Alexa Kunowsky converted a goal off a pass from Doherty to put the Dores up by three, 12-9
With 6:33 left in the game, the Terriers cut the lead to one, and repeated the feat at 2:05 following Doberty’s third goal of the game. BU tied the game with 1:33 left, and took the final lead with 16 seconds left, 14-13.
