NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the 10th time in school history, both Vanderbilt’s men’s and women’s tennis teams have been selected to play in the NCAA Tournament.
This year, both Commodore squads will travel to Knoxville for their opening round match. The women’s team, ranked 19th in the nation (15-8, 7-4 Southeastern Conference) will be making its 17th consecutive appearance in the tournament, while the 32nd-ranked men’s team (13-10, 4-7 SEC) will be making its 10th overall trip, and fourth in five years.
Women earn a No. 2 seed
For the second year in a row, Vanderbilt’s women’s team is the No. 2 seed in the Knoxville, Tenn. region. Also joining the Commodores are host and No. 1 seed Tennessee, No. 3 Winthrop and No. 4 College of Charleston. Vanderbilt will take on Winthrop in the opening round.
The only team in the Knoxville region that the Commodores have faced this year is Tennessee, who defeated Vanderbilt 5-2. Should the Dores advance out of the regional, they will face the winner of the Chapel Hill, N.C. regional, which features UNC, East Tenn. St., Washington and Maryland.
Last year in the tournament, the Commodores defeated Indiana, 4-0, in the opening round before falling to Tennessee, 4-1, in the second round.
Men also earn two seed
In the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team will take on Virginia Tech, the No. 3 seed of the region. Also in the Knoxville region is host Tennessee and Radford, who is the No. 4 seed.
Earlier this season, Vanderbilt lost to Tennessee, 4-3, in a tightly contested match. The Commodores haven’t played the other two teams in the region. The team that advances from the Knoxville region will face the winner of the Cal region, which features Marist, Minnesota and Fresno State.
Last year, the Commodores fell to Virginia Tech, 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
