NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt lacrosse team fell to the sixth-ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina, 14-9, Friday at the VU Lacrosse Complex.

Sophomore Jennifer Tapscott and freshman Margie Curran each netted hat-tricks for the Commodores in the defeat. Carolina was led by Allison Higgins, who scored four goals and added an assist.

The Commodores came out fast, scoring twice in the game’s first two minutes. Curran scored the game’s first goal at 1:30, followed by a free position goal from Tapscott 30 seconds later.

Carolina would tally the game’s next six goals to open a 6-2 lead in the 15th minute.

Vanderbilt fought back to within a two-goal deficit, as Tapscott and junior Kate Hickman found the back of the net for the Dores.

The teams traded goals in the final minutes of the half, with freshman Ashley Paschall connecting for the Commodores; but a UNC goal with only five seconds remaining in the period gave the Heels at 9-5 lead at the break.

Curran and Tapscott got Vanderbilt going again in the second half, each connecting to bring the Dores to within 9-7.

That was as close as the Commodores could make the game. Late VU goals by Curran and junior Bryn Sedlacek were answered by UNC. The Tar Heels would score three goals in the final 11 minutes while holding Vanderbilt scoreless to make the final 14-9 tally.

In goal for the Commodores, senior Ashley Bastinelli made nine saves, while her North Carolina counterpart Kristen Hordy saved seven VU attempts.
