Nov. 16, 2010

The Vanderbilt women’s swim team returns to the pool Friday to compete in the Western Kentucky Invitational in Bowling Green, Ky., November 19-21. The three-day event will begin at 10:30 a.m. CT at the Bill Powell Natatorium.

“We’ve had a good four weeks of training and I think we are in a really good spot,” said head coach Jeremy Organ. “This gives us an opportunity to see where we are mid-season. We got through this past month without any major problems and I look forward to a good weekend.”

The Commodores are coming off a four week hiatus after hosting duals meets against South Carolina and Western Kentucky on October 16, 2010. In Vanderbilt’s first meeting with Western Kentucky this season, the Commodores fell 235-58. The day was highlighted by freshman Chloe Ott’s third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Vanderbilt has competed in the Western Kentucky Invitational every year since the program resurrected in 2006. The Commodores have had recent success at the WKU Invite with Erika Deardorf shattering the school record in the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:02.98 last year to help lead the team to a second place finish. During the 2008-09 season, Laura Dillon broke the 19-year old 200-yard breaststroke record in a time of 2:22.00. Vandy finished third in 2007 and fourth in 2006.

This season, Western Kentucky will be hosting Vanderbilt, Sweanee, Evansville, Arkansas-Little Rock, Eastern Illinois, University of the Cumberlands, and the University of Mary Washington.

The event opens up on Friday with the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle relay, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and the 400 medley relay. On Saturday the swimmers will compete in the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 800 freestyle relay. The meet closes out on Sunday with the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.

“We are just trying to go in and improve individually and have everybody swim good races,” Coach Organ said. “We want to see if we can get some individual best times this weekend.”
