TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Vanderbilt swimming team opened up the 2009 fall season with a solid showing against Alabama and Centenary at the Alabama Aquatic Center Saturday. The Commodores went 1-1 in dual action, as it defeated Centenary 177-82, while falling to Alabama 199-79.

The `Dores recorded nine top-three finishes in its first competition of the calendar year. Eight Commodores experienced swimming in their first collegiate meet, Chelsea Morey, Sarah Lynch, Jessica Eccher, Elizabeth Galenti, Rose Cornelson, Amy Salce, Ellen Kilgore and Erika Deardorf.

Morey and Cornelson both recorded top-five finishes in the 100-yard backstroke after swimming to times of 1:01.00 and 1:01.15. Both of those times were faster than any Vanderbilt swimmer recorded all of last season.

Sophomore Laura Dillon, the school’s record holder in the 200-yard breaststroke did not compete in either of the two breaststroke events. Instead, Dillon turned her attention to the 100 and 200-yard butterfly where she swam to a pair of top-three finishes.

Lynch led the way for the Commodores in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.47, good for fourth place. Elizabeth Brunk and Allie Voss swam to fifth and seventh-place finishes, respectively.
