NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt swimming and diving team travels east to Knoxville to square off against Arkansas and Tennessee Friday at 1 p.m. CDT. The ‘Dores are coming off a weekend home sweep of Centre and Rhodes College. The Commodores defeated Centre 127-106 and Rhodes 176-43 for the program’s first dual wins since restarting the program in 2006.
“We are looking forward to competing against two really good SEC teams,” head coach Jeremy Organ said. “The meet is going to be very competitive and will be a great test of character for our young team.”
Through two meets the Commodore young squad is showing that they have a bright future with 85 percent of the team being underclassman. Sophomore Leigh-Ann Axt is looking to improve on last week’s stellar performance where she cruised to first place finishes in the 500 yard and 1,000 yard freestyles. Axt’s 1,000-yard time of 10:32.84 topped the second place finisher by over 40 seconds.
The freshman trio of Kelly Obranowicz, Laura Dillon and Nicole Woodworth look to continue their early season success against the Razorbacks and Lady Vols Friday.
Obranowicz will be trying to win her third consecutive 100-yard butterfly race after posting a season high time of 55.06 against Rhodes and Centre. The Marietta, Ga., native shaved over four seconds off her previous time that she recorded last month against Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Woodworth, a Seattle, Wash., native enters Friday’s triangular two-for-two in first-place finishes in the three-meter dive, including a season high score of 227.33 against Centre and Rhodes.
The meet against the three SEC schools will serve as the first competitive dual meets at the brand new state-of-the-art Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center. The 16-event Triangular will begin with the 200-medley relay and end with the 200 freestyle relay.
Friday’s match between the three Southeastern Conference teams was selected as one of three Meets of the Week by Swimming World Magazine. For a Swimming World’s preview of Friday’s meet between the Commodores, Razorbacks and Lady Vols, click here.
