NASHVILLE, Tenn. Â The Vanderbilt Swimming and Diving team opened its 2008 season by falling to Alabama 182-95 at the Alabama Aquatic Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Commodores young squad was paced by a trio of freshman in the match up against the Crimson Tide. Vanderbilt swept the top three times in the 100-yard butterfly.
“It’s the first meet of the season and it was good to see where we are as a team and what we need to improve on,” head coach Jeremy Organ said. “I think it was a good experience for everyone and we are now looking forward to our first home meet on October 11.”
Freshman Kelly Obranowicz claimed the 100-yard butterfly title after posting a time of 59.78. Teammate Laura Dillon finished in second place in the same event after swimming to a time of 1:02.96. Dillon, a Reston, Va., native also placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:32.11.
Nicole Woodworth won the three-meter dive with a final score of 182.50. Woodworth, a freshman from Seattle, Wash., crushed the rest of the field by over 40 points.
The Commodores 400-yard freestyle relay team of Leigh-Ann Axt, Allie Voss, Jennifer Molchan and Obranowicz posted a first-place finish after swimming to a time of 3:48.19, nearly 10 seconds faster than the second place team.
Coach Organ’s squad will return to competition October 11, as they host Center and Rhodes in a Triangular. The meet is scheduled for 1 p.m.
