NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Hosting their first home swim meet in 15 years, the Vanderbilt Commodores lost to Miami 186-74 on Friday at the Centennial Sportsplex. Freshman Leigh-Ann Axt captured her 12th individual race win of the year, capturing the 100-yard butterfly.

“I think overall it went well,” Organ said. “Everyone was excited to swim in front of the home crowd. We had a lot of real good times. The girls were a little tired from the break. Overall, I’m very happy with what I saw today.”

The swim meet was the first for Vanderbilt since January 24, 1992, when the Commodores hosted Emory University at the Memorial Gym Pool.

Freshman Rachel Dyer (Chattanooga, Tenn.) turned in a strong performance in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing second with a season-best time of 10:49.09. Emerson Davis of Miami won the event, finishing in 10:45.70.

A pair of freshmen turned in a second and third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, as Leigh-Ann Axt (Plano, Texas) finished in second and Jennifer Molchan (Pensacola, Fla.) came in third. Axt finished in 1:54.64, four tenths of a second behind Miami’s Ryann Labreche who came in first place, while Molchan finished with a time of 1:55.44.

Molchan recorded a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, notching a time of 53.42. Kirsten Pomerleau of Miami won the race with a time of 52.74.

Molchan earned her second runner-up finish in the 500-yard freestyle. The freshman finished with a time of 5:14.42, seven seconds behind Labreche.

Axt won her 12th individual race of the year in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 57.94, a second ahead of Miami’s Katherine Eason.

“Leigh-Ann swam well,” Organ said. “She had a real tough double to go from the 200 freestyle and then about five minutes later do the 200 butterfly. It was kind of a gutcheck for her and she just about pulled it off, which we would like to see her do that. She had a very strong performance. It will help her compete better at the end of the season.”

In the final event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Axt, Christina Chao (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Alex Jennings (Dallas, Texas) and Molchan finished second with a time of 1:42.11.

The Commodores return to action on Saturday, January 19, when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks.
