ATHENS, Ga. – The Vanderbilt 400-yard medley relay team of Rose Cornelson, Allie Voss, Jess Eccher and Jennifer Molchan swam into the school record books Friday evening with a time of 3:52.71, highlighting the Commodores at the third day of the 2010 SEC Championships.
The 400-medley relay mark on Friday topped the previous school record by seven-tenths of a second (3:53.46, 1990).
The relay was setup perfectly as Cornelson led off the relay with a strong opening leg before Voss and Eccher took the pool for the second and third legs before Molchan closed out the race with a strong finish.
“It was great to break the school record in the 400-medley relay tonight,” head coach Jeremy Organ said. “Everyone in the race contributed for an outstanding swim. All in all it was a successful day for our team.”
Earlier in the day, Vanderbilt recorded a combined eight lifetime best marks. Amy Salce, Ellen Kilgore, Anna Fargo, Laura Dillon, Elizabeth Brunk, Sarah Lynch, Stephanie Falcone and Cornelson all swam at least one personal best time on the day.
Dillon and Brunk tallied career best performances in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking times of 57.78 and 58.71, respectively.
Salce and Kilgore led the five VU swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking season-highs of 1:52.79 and 1:54.39, good for 34th and 38th place respectively.
Voss and Dillon led the `Dores in the 100-yard breaststroke with season-high times of 1:04.63 and 1:04.81. Voss was looking to break her own school record (1:04.11) in the event after setting it at the 2009 SEC Championships while Dillon has come close to breaking her teammates record in the past.
“I thought Allie and Laura swam strong in the 100-breast today,” Organ noted.
Through 29 events, the `Dores currently stand in tenth place in the women’s team standings with 56 points.
The Vanderbilt Commodores will return to the Gabrielsen Natatorium pool Saturday morning for the fourth and final day of the 2010 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships.
