SWIM remains in second place

Bowling Green, Ky. – After day two at the Western Kentucky Invitational, the Vanderbilt women’s swim team remains in second place with 583 points. The Commodores took first place in the 800-yard freestyle relay and set season-best times in four events at the Bill Powell Natatorium.

“I am really happy with our performances up to this point in the meet,” said head coach Jeremy Organ. “I am looking forward to see how the third day of the meet goes.”

The team of Erika Deardorf, Michelle Williamson, Jennifer Molchan, and Amy Salce closed out the day by winning the 800-yard freestyle relay in a time of 7:45.28. The day began with the Commodores taking second place and setting a season-best time of 1:47.88 in the 200-yard medley relay behind Chelsea Morey, Sarah Lynch, Jess Eccher, and Melissa Roberts.

Aside from the great team effort, Chelsea Morey finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58.74, setting the team-best mark for the season. Freshman Laura Furr was close behind, finishing in 58.76 on a way to setting a personal-best time for the season.

Amy Salce was able to top her own season-best time in the 200-yard freestyle, completing the race in 1:54.82 on her way to a third-place finish. Senior co-captain Jennifer Molchan competed in the event for the first time this season and finished in a time of 1:56.81.

Sarah Lynch set the season-best mark in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing third in a time of 1:05.88. The Burke, Va., native beat her own season-best time by two and a half seconds.

Erika Deardorf took fifth place in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:39.32. Even though Michelle Wiliamson swam the event in 4:37.14, she finished eight since she was competing in the group B race. Freshman Chloe Ott was able to take sixth in a time of 4:40.27.

Despite finishing eighth in the 100-yard butterfly, Jess Eccher continued her success at the Hilltopper Invitational by swimming the event in a time of 57.74. She topped her fastest time last season by a little less than half of a second.

Vanderbilt ended day one in second place with 242 points and set five season-best marks. Host Western Kentucky still remains in first place with 852 points and the University of Evansville is behind Vanderbilt with 462 points.

Vanderbilt will begin the final day tomorrow morning with preliminaries before starting the finals at 4:30 p.m. CT. The women will be competing in the 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay.
