Swim narrowly falls at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Vanderbilt women’s swimming team dropped a tight meet at Evansville, 162-132, in their first meet of 2012.

The Commodores got victories from Amy Salce (1000 free), Chrissy Oberg (100 back, 100 fly), Margaret Freeman (200 fly) and Caroline Thomas (50 free, 100 free).

The meet opened with Evansville taking a win in the 200 yard medley relay, edging the Vanderbilt quartet of Oberg, Sarah Lynch, Jess Eccher and Thomas by just over a second. The Commodores also placed third (Chelsea Morey, Laura Dillon, Rebecca Young and Melissa Roberts).

The Commodores then took a 1-2 finish in the 1000 freestyle, with Salce winning in a time of 10:40.31 and Michelle Williamson placing second with a mark of 10:46.04.

The 200 freestyle saw Erika Deardorf place second, just two seconds behind Evansville’s Michelle Tipton. Lauren Torres placed third and Margaux Georgiadis was fourth.

Oberg then captured her first victory of the day in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 58.94.

Lynch then earned a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, just over two seconds behind the Purple Aces’ Caroline Lee.

The 200 butterfly saw Freeman pick up the win in a time of 3:00.00, with Dillon placing third just two seconds behind Freeman.

Thomas than took a win in the 50 free, besting Evansville’s Michea Reinitz by less than a second. Morey placed third with a time of 25.70.

Thomas followed that up a win in the 100 free, posting a mark of 52.73. More placed third (27.09) and Roberts fourth (55.78).

Alexis Mayhall narrowly missed a win in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 2:09.35. Salce was right behind her for third with a time of 2:09.77.

Dillon then picked up another second place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.46.

Deardorf was edged by 2.2 seconds in the 500 freestyle, placing second. Freeman placed third and Torres fourth.

Oberg’s victory in the 100 butterfly kept the Commodores in it, besting Evansville’s Samantha Montgomery by .36 seconds.

Faulkner’s second place finish in the 200 yard IM preceded the Commodores placing second in the 400 freestyle relay, as Morey, Roberts, Torres and Thomas finished less than a second behind the Purple Aces.

The Commodores return to action for their final home meet of the year on Saturday, January 21, when they host Marshall. The meet with the Thundering Herd gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
