Bowling Green, Ky. – The Vanderbilt women’s swim team is in second place at the Western Kentucky Invitational after scoring 242 points Friday. The Commodores wrapped up day one at the Bill Powell Natatorium by setting season-best marks in all five events.
“We had some good races today,” said head coach Jeremy Organ. “Our girls had good times and swam well individually. I’m happy with what they did after not competing for a few weeks.”
The finals of day one started with the 200-yard freestyle relay where Vanderbilt finished fourth while setting a season-best time of 1:39.42. The foursome of Jennifer Molchan, Sarah Lynch, Jess Eccher, and Melissa Roberts broke their own record set against Arkansas on October 15. Anna Fargo, Laura Furr, Margaux Georgiadis, and Betsy Galenti finished in fifth place with a time of 1:40.62.
Individually, sophomore Amy Slace had a successful day by finishing second and setting the season-best time in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:03.16. Freshman Margaux Georgiadis swam the second-fastest time when she completed the race in 5:05.90, more than ten seconds faster than her previous season-best time. Freshman Michelle Williamson also improved on her time by ten seconds when she finished in 5:06.33.
Sophomore Jess Eccher earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.31, an improvement of three seconds on her previous best time this year. Chloe Ott had her best time of the season when she finished in seventh place with a time of 2:10.64.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Melissa Roberts finished fourth in 24.65, a season-best for the team. Sarah Lynch finished second on the team in a time of 25.11.
The meet closed out with the 400-yard medley relay where the team of Chelsea Morey, Chloe Ott, Jess Eccher and Melissa Roberts finished second in a season-best time of 3:56.44, almost four seconds better than the previous best time.
The Commodores finished in second place last season at the Hilltopper Invitational and have improved in the meet every season. Vanderbilt has competed in the event every year since the program resurrected in 2006.
Host Western Kentucky is in first place with 340 points.
Vanderbilt will begin day two tomorrow morning with preliminaries before starting the finals at 4:30 p.m. C.T. The women will be competing in the 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay.
“I expect the girls to do very well tomorrow and put up good times,” Organ said.
