NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt swimming and diving team fell to 0-2 on the season, losing a dual meet to North Florida 162-69. For the second straight week, the Commodores were led by freshman Leigh-Ann Axt who posted a pair of victories in individual races and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Axt posted her first win of the evening in the 200-yard freestyle. The freshman recorded a time of 1:54.99, two seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Megan Boudread from North Florida.
Axt continued her perfect night in the 100-yard butterfly, with a winning time of 57.99 seconds, two and a half seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
The Commodores got their third win of the evening in the 200-yard freestyle relay as four freshmen teamed up for the victory. Julia Applebaum, Christina Chao, Jennifer Molchan and Axt combined for a time of 1:42.13 to come in just ahead of the team from North Florida that came in with a time of 1:42.64.
Vanderbilt also posted three runner-up finishes in races. Rachel Dyer came in second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:12.84. Alex Jennings finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.21. Applebaum finished runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke, recording a time of 1:04.47.
The Commodores return to the pool tomorrow as they travel to Statesboro, Ga., for a dual meet against Georgia Southern.
