Six games against teams that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament highlight Vanderbilt’s 2012 lacrosse schedule, announced Wednesday by Head Coach Cathy Swezey.
The Commodores will face four of the 2011 tournament’s top five seeds, including a season-opening matchup against Duke in Nashville. Games against North Carolina and American Lacrosse Conference rivals Northwestern and Florida will take place on the road.
“Our schedule is competitive, as it is always,” Swezey said. “Playing in the ALC, there is never an easy game. But we also start out really tough with two (Atlantic Coast Conference) games in February against Duke and [North] Carolina. We feel like we should be competitive with anybody this year so we expect those games to be good ones.”
The Commodores will log plenty of frequent flier miles this season, with road trips including Stanford, Canisius and New Hampshire.
Spring practice opens for the 2012 Commodores on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Vanderbilt will travel to the South of the Border exhibition tournament on Sunday, Feb. 5 before opening the regular season at home against the Blue Devils one week later.
March features home games against Boston College, Louisville and league rival Penn State, while April begins with a three-game home stand that has Presbyterian sandwiched between ALC opponents Johns Hopkins and Ohio State. Senior Day is scheduled for Sunday, April 22 against Jacksonville.
The 2011 ALC Tournament will take place in Gainesville, Fla., on the first weekend of May. The NCAA Tournament begins on May 12 and culminates with the NCAA Championship on May 27 in Stony Brook, N.Y.
Led by a 10-member senior class that features All-American Ally Carey, the Commodores are looking to make their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the past six seasons.
