HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Vanderbilt women’s golf used moving day at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate to scale the team leaderboard all the way to fifth place after carding a 2-over par second round.
With a total of 286 strokes Tuesday—10 stroke lower than the first round—the Commodores sit just one stroke behind Texas and four off a podium finish.
“I thought today was another big day for our program, I told the girls today happened because of how they finished yesterday’s round,” Vandy head coach Greg Allen said. “They’re really showing a lot of grit and toughness. We are excited about the opportunity we have before us with Wednesday’s round.”
Vanderbilt was led Tuesday by its senior captain and 2022 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate third-place finisher Celina Sattelkau as she notched a 3-under-par second round. With a bogey-free round, Sattelkau is now back in that familiar third-place spot, only one stroke off second and three off the individual lead.
“Celina was as good as I’ve seen her in a long time. She loves everything about the course and it’s showing,” Allen said.
Tillie Claggett also got used to the course Tuesday as she finished with an even-par 71, a four-stroke improvement from round one.
“I was really proud of how Tillie bounced back today,” Allen said. “As long as she hits it, Long Cove can get right off the tee for her and she’s really managed her game well.”
Virginie Ding—tied for 20th individually along with Claggett—shot a 2-over-par 73 on the day. Natasha Kiel was 3-over-par Tuesday and Tess Davenport was 5-over-par.
“Ding and Nat played some really good golf with the exception of a couple holes,” Allen said.
Vandy made great strides in the second round both on the scoreboard and on the stat sheet. The Commodores now have the most pars of any team at the tournament—131—as well as now ranking among the top six teams in Par 3 and Par 4 averages.
Vanderbilt will tee off with fourth-place Texas and sixth-place Wakes Forest at 9:20 a.m. CT. Live scoring for the event can be found HERE and a live broadcast courtesy of GOLF Channel is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. CT.
