Commodores drop home match to 37th-ranked Blue Raiders

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In the penultimate non-conference matchup of the season, Vanderbilt fell to regional rival No. 37 Middle Tennessee 5-2 at the Currey Tennis Center on Sunday.

The Blue Raiders (11-4) took the necessary doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 2 to claim the point, while the Commodores’ (4-9) pair of Marcus Ferreira and Adam Sraberg won at No. 3 with 6-4 decision.

Singles play had just gotten started prior to a 40-minute rain delay, which resulted in the resumption of the match indoors. No. 117 George Harwell and Jeremie Casabon took straight-set wins at Nos. 1 and 4 with 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-4 scorelines, respectively, to get the Dores on the board. For the second time this weekend, though, Vanderbilt dropped the first two singles points of the match and found itself down 3-0 before Harwell and Casabon could get the Dores back within one.

Down the stretch, MTSU pulled off a clinching win at No. 5 before adding one more win at No. 6. In all, the Blue Raiders have now defeated five Power Five opponents this season with victories over Louisville, Iowa, Notre Dame and two wins over Vanderbilt.

Each of the six singles matches completed in straight sets.

Vanderbilt will resume its season on March 24 when it welcomes the DePaul Blue Demons to the Currey Tennis Center after an off weekend. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
